Tools & Utilities

If you have created a handy utility, spreadsheet, template or other guide that you find useful while playing Statis Pro then let me know and if you like we can include it here on the site, or at least link to it externally. If you can think of something that would be useful to you in your own replays or simulations then let me know and I will see if it's something that could be added to the site at some stage.

This section is where you will find all the handy tools, utilities, templates, spreadsheets and macros that people find useful while playing Statis Pro or designing card sets.Although most of us will play the game in its original form, as a card based game on a tabletop, there's no shortage of little utilities that can be used to speed up play or enhance the experience, especially with many people playing alongside their PC or laptop it makes sense to have computer based programs or tools that will be useful.

I am comfortable in C++ and Windows32 based dialog programming so will aim to put together many more little programs that will be useful for various things connected to the hobby. Do let me know if you can think of something that might be useful. Of course, with Alex Mittermeyer's fantastic windows based version of the game you might decide to forego the traditional cards and charts method and play everything through there, especially when extra season sets are added.

I can do some simple dynamic database programming and javascript too so I will try to include some web based utilities as well that can be accessed at any time and used during a game session. Since there are currently no programs that connect over a network just yet (although this should be added to SPFBWin soon) I might even try to put together a game log system that will allow you to view a webpage while you "play" a game over a chat program such as ICQ or MSN messenger. This logging page could be used to draw the cards, keep track of scores and time and allow you to manage the teams and players in a simple interface.

I'll be doing quite a bit of work on card creation too with the ultimate goal being able to run a small program that examines the contents of text files which contain stats taken from eg the NFL site and create an entire seasons worth of playing cards for you in seconds. I already have most of the formulas in place and the parsing won't be a problem so this should not be a very difficult task now as long as I can find a bit of time, peace and quiet to put it all together. Of course, I've always wanted to write a SP Football game myself but I wonder if it's worth it with Alex's program working so nicely.

:: Fast Action Cards

Planned FAC card generator which will include an Excel version with a simple macro for selecting a random card as well as a web based version and a little windows dialog utility that does the same thing.

:: Computer versions of Statis Pro

There are two version of Statis Pro for the PC, one is Statis Pro for Windows by Neville Parker-Hughes which is a very nicely done little program although not quite as polished as the SPFBWin program that Alex Mittermeyer has created. Alex is continually upgrading and tweaking his program while the Neville-Hughes version is effectively closed. SPFBWin currently features a leage database for 1989,2001 and 2002 but more seasons will surely be added as well as extra functionality including the suggestion of a network play option which will be fantastic.

:: Player / Team Cards

A utility that creates a randomised team complete with player card stats and having a range of player skills rather than the 'All Star' type teams you usually get in your own drafts or teams. I would like to devise some kind of points based system to allow more strategic drafting options for competition play so that you can't end up with All-Pro players in every position. I'll also post my Excel templates that allow you to create entire league season card stats right away and hopefully there will be a web based and windows dialog based version of this. There'll also be the ability to enter a players stats and get a single custom card displayed on the web page. Ultimately the goal is to have a program that takes a set of text files with stats in it and creates an entire leagues cards in one go.

:: Playing Tools

A solitaire playing tool that will be a web based table/chart system, a windows dialog version and probably an Excel version too. Will include the Jim Gordon advanced solitaire options as well as variations for West Coast, Joe Gibbs offenses, 46 defenses etc. I'll also post nice templates and scorepads that you can use to keep score in your games or log stats and play by play. The ultimate goal here is to create a web based gamelog system to allow players to resolve plays over the internet using the web page to draw cards and keep time, scores etc, and allow the two players just to worry about the play calling and resolving of plays. Hopefully this will include the ability to enter offensive and defensive plays and have them revealed by clicking a button on the web page.
