This is where I will post details of the updates posted on the site, so check here for all the latest news. I've worked hard to get the site up and running but it may be a few days until I start getting the main content posted. The forum is open now though, so please get yourself registered and start posting your topics in there right away, nothing like a busy forum to keep everyone interested. I am going to transfer some of the threads from the Yahoo group into there as an archived record.
Gene Marconi is certainly coming up trumps lately, and has kindly sent on his 2nd edition of Great Teams, which includes some new teams from the 1960's and 1970's to keep you all interested. It would be great to get some feedback about these cards and the site in general, so please be sure to drop in to the forum and let us know what you think. Thanks again Gene. That also reminds me, I have some great stuff from Derrick Johnson that I need to post, as well as some replay writeups from DiceQ!!!!
Gene Marconi sent me the 1967 Raiders offense again, hopefully that's all done and dusted now. Thanks again to Gene because he has also sent in a "Great Teams" set, promisingly labelled "#1" (more please Gene!), which you can download below as a zipped up set of PDF's. The teams it contains are also shown below. I've been much more busy than I thought, but am aiming to finish and post the 1957 official set this week to at least tie that loose end up. Sorry for the delay.
Hope everyone is enjoying the 2003 NFL Season. Nice to see the Redskins beginning to pick up! I am going to make it a priority to complete my rules and cards modifications ready for the end of the season so that it will all be in place at the conclusion of the 2003 season, hopefully DiceQ and Roberto will be willing to help too.
I reposted the 1967 season set (you can use the same link below as the file has the same name). Gene missed a few files out and there were some errors which he kindly fixed up and sent over to me. Hopefully all the teams are now present and correct. Thanks again Gene.
Gene Marconi has once again come up trumps with his custom 1967 set which I hope everyone will enjoy. Gene has done a great job with these and tells us to look out for Travis Williams kick return card (Green Bay) - wow! 4 TD's and a 41 yd average that season. I shall try to get Derrick's 1970's sets up soon, although they'll need quite a bit of work as they're not in a usable format at the moment (to make PDF's). I am also doing the 1957 set by hand (official retro pack) so that shouldn't be far behind. Also, I managed to locate the 1981 set on Ebay at last, so when that arrives I will have the complete collection, although I'm trying to get duplicates of every season so I can have a clean, unpunched set for every year, I'll be selling off my duplicates once that happens.
OK, I finally finished off the last of the 1984 teams, all available on a team by team basis in the Teams Database. I also zipped them together so you can download the whole of 1984 in one go if you prefer - the file weighs in at around 1 MB. Each team is a 40Kb PDF within the zip file, or like I said, you can just grab individual PDF's if you are only interested in specific teams. I will probably knock out the 1957 set quickly as that one is quite rare and makes a nice change of pace, and once I get Derrick's sets from the 1970's up, we'll have sets from every decade from the 1950's onwards.
Another quick update! I've added scans of the Ball Marker, 10 yard Marker, Play Selection Charts (offense & defense) and the Offensive and Defensive Displays, so now you have everything you need to play the game right here at this website. I'm almost done with the 1984 database too, with 22 teams done, just 6 more to go and that season will be complete.
I've also added an update for the 1980's "Best Of" series by creating a single page file with the single best offensive seasons cards on there, rather than using the total decade stats as in the main pack. I will endeavour to do a defensive and special teams file for this too
Quick update - 20 of 28 teams from 1984 are now available, I will have 1984 finished very soon, certainly before the end of the month, just had a lot of stuff going on lately.
Well. I've finally got cracking on my big Statis-Pro project, which is to copy the cards for every team in the official sets of 1980-1991 into a nice PDF file so that the complete collection is here for download and enjoyment. I have a nice Word template set up and a procedure that I have down to a fine art. It takes me about 40-45 minutes per team, but I allow an hour for the odd mistake, plus fatigue and generally not going too mental. I have added a new page that will be a database of all these single teams, which you can find at the link below. At the moment there are 14 teams from the 1984 season, and the 1982 Lions (done as a favour for someone). I will probably go through a season at a time, or I might do the Superbowl and playoff teams first and then go back and fill the others in. As I complete a season I will zip the teams together for a single "season download". I chose 1984 because it was the 1st set I ever played, and it also featured the 5th edition rules (or was it the 4th) - anyway, it was the first season that had the full stats for running backs (instead of the old letter code for long gains), and it was a great season with some strong playoff teams and a dream Superbowl matchup between Marino and Montana - it might not have lived up to the hype in reality, but I bet a good Statis-Pro replay would be much more interesting between those teams. Anyway, I'm not going to send myself mad, so I plan to do 2 or 3 teams every night, or at least 1 team every night, so it should only take me a couple of weeks or a month to do an entire season. I've done a swap for 1981 so that should arrive soon, and of course, when this is done, you'll all have a copy of every season. You do need to use Internet Explorer 4+ to use this database, so Netscape users might have to view this site with IE to get those teams.
Unfortunately there is a problem with BBallsports.com which hosts the all time football stats database and this has held up my update of 20 new cards for the 1980's All Star set. This set has cards based on single great seasons rather than an aggregate, so Marino in 1984, Montana in 1989, Dickerson in 1984 etc. I will also finish the 'Best of the 1990's' set once this database is back online again. I'm also making plans for the 2003 card set already, hopefully I will be able to work with DiceQ and Roberto and produce the cards with my PDF card maker template. I'll be adding a lot of detail though, based on what stats you can get from NFL.com and other sites, such as Roberto's improved kick return system, plus a load of stuff such as proper kickoff cards for teams, and factors like pass pressure and deflections on defense and all kinds of neat stuff. The 2003 card set should be the best ever! It might be a few years before we have a 'Best of 2000's' card set though.
There's also been some positive response about my single page A4 format for cards so I will look to add some of those to the site soon as well. It does save on printing and cutting out cards and allows you to quickly and easily play games from a single page - although you still have to figure out a way to do the displays and lineups (a great way is to use little photos of the actual players as tokens, but keep your stats page hidden). I still have some teams from the 1970's by Derrick to add, and Eugene is still working on the 60's seasons. Hopefully I can convince both of those guys to do a 'Best of Decade' card set for the 60's and 70's. I will also make the 1957 single season set (official Statis-Pro release, quite rare) my next target once I complete the 1984 set. Roberto is still working on the USFL, but I now have an official stats book for that so might help him to finish out the 3 seasons there, and I might even look at some college football. I know we have someone working on the NFL Europe stuff too.
I've spent the last couple of days putting together a special 1980's All Star Set that is set up to be a Pro Bowl showdown between the best 50 or so players from my favourite football decade, the 1980's (and for Statis-Pro, the 1980's were about all we got). You can download and print these cards and see if you can coach your favourite conference to victory. It will be tough for the AFC as the NFC was pretty dominant in this era, but with Dan Marino at the helm you have plenty of firepower under your control and it should be a fun challenge. I hope you enjoy the cards, it's been a while since I posted anything but I'll probably be getting on with handballing the playoff teams from 1980 through 1991 over the summer months, so look out for those.
Have just handballed the 1984 Rams and 1982 Lions for a couple of guys on the Yahoo group, will post these here soon as I am about to start handballing the playoff teams for 1980-1991 (and the rest later). I am always looking for people willing to help with this - I can provide a Word document template so you just have to edit the names, teams and data etc. Anyway, I just posted another FAC deck - this time with the larger format cards, which are great when printed out on thinnish card stock!
I've added a huge page which covers Jim Gordon's wonderful advanced solitaire system allowing you to have much more in depth games by yourself, and have a lot more variation in formations and play calling. Also included are the original solitaire rules from 6th Edition rules, plus about ten custom charts for Solitaire Offense and Defense based on famous coaches and teams such as Joe Gibbs, Bill Walsh, Marv Levy, Buddy Ryan etc. Check it out!
Oh, and I just added a PDF version of the FAC card deck - this should be useful for those who want to print out a new set on some shiny card stock, or better still for printing out two or three sets to cut down on the amount of shuffling required when you play :-)
Just a quick "while I had nothing else better to do" update. I scanned in the official Statis-Pro scorepad and also designed my own Statis-Pro game field based on the official one. These are both on the site as JPG's that you can either print off as they are, or insert into a Word document or whatever for easy batch printing etc. Maybe I should have scanned in that ball marker and first down marker too!
I'm rounding up info on what's going on with other guys too, I have some teams to post from DiceQ, plus Derrick Johnson is working on some 1970's sets and is doing some great work trying to normalise the stats and numbers by comparing different SP eras. There's a guy who's done an updated version of the SP rules, plus fellas working on NFL Europe, XFL, USFL and of course seasons from 1967 through to 1980. I am still figuring out the best plan of attack to get the official 1980-1991 sets posted on this site. It could be a "long-term" project by handballing teams one at a time throughout the ages! I'll probably rejig those sets from the 1990's that are in XLS format so they are in the nice PDF Statis-Pro card format style first.
I did notice that I actually don't have the 1981 set, so my collection is incomplete. If anyone has 1981 and is interested in a sale or trade, let me know. I have a couple of sets spare that I could swap I think from the late 1980's. I will get hold of it somehow though, so watch this space!
You probably noticed an email from me in the Yahoo Group - here it is again just as a "for your info". Basically, it's all about my current project which is called "Statis-Pro Evolution" which will be derived from the game we know and love but will extend, develop and improve upon the original, and hopefully still be fun and easy to play. Let me know if you have any thoughts or ideas about this, or comments on the original SP game/rules.
"Although I'm busy right now, I wanted to let you know about a project
I am undertaking and which I hope will be complete by the close of the 2003/2004
season. It's called "Statis-Pro Evolution" and will be my custom
extension to Statis-Pro Football. I've used SP in the name because the game
has its roots there but Evolution refers to a whole change in how the game
is set up and played. I've been doing a lot of hardcore football reading,
books by guys like Bob Carroll, Pete Palmer etc and am breaking down every
area of the game into much more detail and realism. I will be replacing FAC
cards with d10 dice rolls and charts, although I'll probably inlclude a pre-generated
FAC style pack. Everything will be based on %ages which makes it much easier
to follow (none of this base 8, base 12 stuff) and I will be making use of
all the stats appearing on NFL.com, I'll be releasing the card formulas as
well with the full rulebook and season cards etc. There's such a lot of thought
going into this and it will include a customisable playbook, and things that
should have gone into SP, such as custom kickoff results (eg 2002 Oakland
averaged 67 yds per kickoff, Cincinnati about 54 - a huge difference in field
position!). Also, instead of blocking results being the same for all, things
like rushing and pass pressure will be team based first and foremost so that
a monster rushing team against a very poor rush defense will be more likely
to spring good blocks than if it was the other way round, same with pass rush
which will always be "on" to reflect teams like TB who get a lot
of heat on the QB without specific blitzing. Zone defenses will be covered,
and lots of neat schemes that allow you to use DBs in running defense positions
on the line, contributing to tackles etc, but leaving seams and zones for
quick pass routes. Player cards and charts will be separate so you'll have
a SP like display with player names but stats will be on a separate sheet.
So you won't be able to triple cover the WR that has great numbers on his
card, you'll have to adjust your defense based on your knowledge of the players
and teams. Stadium conditions will come into play, momentum, tiredness, really,
there is so much going into this game. And that's where you guys come in.
I was just wondering how many people would have the time (this won't be for
a while) to help me playtest the new game and come up with ideas and suggestions
that aren't already in place. It may end up being overly long and complex
(although you will be surprised how streamlined a lot of it is because I wrapped
up a lot of the complexity in very neat ways!), but I am very positive that
this could be the best tabletop football game around. At this moment it is
99% certain it will be free release, although as someone who is currently
out of work, it would be cool to jazz it up a little and ask for a nominal
donation for the game. Anyway, that's well into the future. I already have
a million charts and notes jotted down and a billion ideas, but I am always
willing to hear general complaints and comments about Statis-Pro, what you
liked, didn't like, what worked, didn't work and what you would have changed,
what you are always fiddling with yourself in terms of custom rules. I can't
promise to take it all into account and I WILL have already come up with many
of the same ideas you guys have (we're all
football fans, so I guess many of us have similar ideas about the game), what
kinds of things you always thought would have been cool to include rather
than ignore (even if some of this is optional).
cheers,Lee"
I've finished my first "Special Pack" for Statis-Pro. This one includes the Top Ten all-time running backs (as decided by me!). It was fairly easy to pick most of the list but I'm sure you'll have your own opinions about who I should and shouldn't have included. Look out for future sets for every position on the field, and then I will come back and do 2nd edition sets for players I missed out but who were close to inclusion the first time round. Hope you enjoy the cards. Why don't you drop in at the forum and give your opinion and feedback!
It's been a couple of weeks since the last update. Busy, busy as usual but found the time to drop in and add some stuff. Firstly we have the first of what I hope will be many sets from the pre-1980 era, Eugene Marconi has sent in this great set from the 1966 season and is beavering away on the 1967 set. 1966 saw the first ever Superbowl won by the Green Bay Packers (who repeated in 1967), let's hope Eugene can stick with it right through to Superbowl XV where the official sets take over, and hopefully we'll have those all on site by then.
Derrick Johnson has also sent me some stuff which I am reformatting for posting, which includes some historical teams, some rules modifications and various other cool things. I'm still waiting on Jim Gordon to send me the 1957 throwback set. Enhduuren Tsegmed [Jerad] has also sent me a beautifully formatted "Statis-Pro Plus" rulebook which basically is an upgraded rulebook for the game including some of his own changes, all laid out in gorgeos colour PDF with some great photos in there. He's currently deciding whether to allow posting here, but hopefully he will give us the all clear.
Ah, I'm actually off to the "Links" page now to finally start filling some of those in - let me know if you come across a great site that is related to Statis-Pro, or the NFL in general, especially relating to stats, reviews, previews, ratings and articles. Keep your eyes peeled for the update there - sometime later today. Oh, and let's see some more action in the Forum shall we - come on fellas !!!
Note: Derrick Johnson spotted some errors, I have fixed the first lot which was the Interception Ranges for all players with 0 Interceptions (which should be 48?) and also some missing Pass Rush data (most noticably Reggie White and Charles Haley!). I found out this was because my roster lookup table had got messed up, so some players sacks had not been registered on the template page. There are apparently a few missing players and stats and so I will fix those when Derrick gets back to me!
OK, I've posted the first version of my 1992 cards, which means every season from 1992 to 2002 is available online. My thanks go to Derrick Johnson for his help with player ratings for offensive line and defense especially. I will probably tweak the cards again at some stage and we are discussing a normalisation project to try and make all the sets more comparable, but this will happen in the future. Enjoy the cards as the Dallas Cowboys usher in the free agency era by taking their first of 3 Superbowl Championships in 4 years. By the way, in case you missed that message in red on the home page, I lost my Inbox mail this week, and at least two great emails from guys who were fellow SP nuts telling me about their experiences and asking about the cards. If you are one of those guys, please do get in touch again as I didn't get chance to reply before my PC crash bombed all my messages out.
Right, I've posted my latest versions of 1993, 1995 and 1998, the missing seasons. These are in PDF format, produced with an automated excel template and a mail merge document. You'll notice they are in the exact same size, format and layout as the official cards so you can print them off and pretend they're real sets. I'll be tackling 1992 next, hopefully liaising with Darren Jones to continue any work he's already done on the sets and I also intend to convert the Excel style versions of the other sets from 1994 onwards into proper format PDF files. Anyone willing to help me with that, let me know, it's just a case of copying and pasting within Excel to change the format of the source data. Anyway, I hope you enjoy my cards, let me know if you spot any obvious mistakes or problems, thanks to DiceQ for his help in some modifications to the cards and error spotting.
Right, I've added four more seasons - as you can see below - which means only 1993, 1995 and 1998 sets are missing from the custom sets past 1992. I will work on these, but hopefully will get some help from you guys out there. If you already have these sets then please let me know so I can post them here. I am still trying to sort out the creator of all the custom sets posted thus far. If you can help me in identifying the author, I will add a page to the site listing them with full credit as contributing patrons. Enjoy the cards, and let's hear from more of you with your ideas for the site and any material or help you can give me.
Well, I'm still tweaking some of this content but decided to post it now anyway, it shouldn't be too long before it's all properly in shape as I am awaiting some info from a couple of people and just tidying up the rough edges. I've also got the introductory paragraphs to finish for these pages. I've typed up the Official 6th Edition Rules which were supposed to be included with the 1992 set. There are some inconsistencies, especially with timing rules that I have to sort out and a page of rules is missing (on its way to me though, so will be there soon). I've also posted Jim Gordon's article, typed up as text rather than that horrible scanned image we've relied on for so long! In addition to this I have also posted the complete guide to Card Creation, using the official Avalon Hill documents, typed up and tabulated properly. Again, some problems that need fixing and looking into, but more or less complete now. I've also added a zip file which contains the 7th Edition rules which come with the TableTop Football game by ABC. This is basically an extension of Statis Pro, and the rules are freely available for download.
Added Custom Card sets to the site for the 2000, 2001 and 2002 seasons. I believe these are all courtesy of Marty & Roberto, but please let me know if I'm wrong. Exciting developments also include tracking down the elusive 1982 set, thanks to Kevin White for his help with that one. I will have the full set when it arrives [excluding 1992]. I'll be scanning in all these sets of course so everyone will have all the sets soon enough. I'll be posting the 6th Edition rules on the site soon, along with Solitaire Play Rules and Jim Gordon's options. I'll add my own options page and then the Card Creation pages pretty soon after that.
The first beta of the site is posted which includes all the main pages and link structure although none of the actual content has been uploaded yet, and the links haven't been filled in. You can find the main menu across the top for the main sections of the site and each page contains links in the right hand margin for relevant sections of that page - most of those aren't linked in to content yet so please be patient! If you spot any problems or errors then let me know, the email address is in the footer of each page along with the last updated date.
The forum is now active and can be used right away, you'll need to register but there's no fee, that's just to keep track of membership. It would be great if you used your real name on this forum as I find it adds a more personal touch to know who people really are rather than anonymous aliases. While the Yahoo groups will no doubt continue to run, and host files, I do hope more people will find this new forum a nicer way to contribute to the community and easier to navigate. Let me know what you think of the site, and of course all ideas and submissions are welcome but please email with me details before you send files to me as I am still on 56K and my Inbox is easily clogged up by large files!
